What is Wax Cotton?

You may not know the term “wax cotton”, but you'll know what it is when you think of a classic British raincoat or an Australian Outback cowboy’s coat and hat. Wax cotton is currently an extremely popular choice of fabric for the discriminating outerwear consumer.

Wax cotton is a unique fabric which is water resistant and extremely durable, yet is breathable, comfortable, and lightweight.

History of Wax Cotton

In the 19th century, mariners would use old cotton sails to make clothing. Out of necessity, they discovered that applying linseed oil to the cotton would protect them from both the water and the wind. 

In the 1930s the linseed oil was replaced by the use of paraffin wax, which does not make the cotton yellow or get brittle with age. Thus, the Handsome Hounds Wax Cotton Dog Coat will retain its handsome look and soft feel, and go on to protect your dog from the elements for years to come.

Care of Wax Cotton

DO NOT WASH your Handsome Hounds Wax Cotton Coat, as using detergent will reduce the wax proofing on the coat.

To maintain the amazing water resistant characteristic of the coat, follow these steps to clean it:

• Gently remove any visible dirt with a damp sponge or gentle brush.
• Never use detergents, liquid or powder.
• Do not put the Handsome Hounds Wax Cotton Coat in the washing machine or dryer.
• Do not send to the dry cleaner. If absolutely necessary, use a little bar soap, flaked soap or Saddle soap on specific areas only.
• Hang coat to dry (but never near flames).

Reproofing Your Wax Cotton

Reproof your Handsome Hounds Wax Cotton Coat as needed. This may mean using a reproofing cream to restore the water resistant characteristic of the coat, or sending the coat out to be professionally reproofed.
